If Microsoft Defender marks a file as malicious, M-Files stops it being previewed or downloaded. The protection is included for M-Files Cloud customers on Microsoft 365 Storage. No separate add-on. No extra Defender licence.
What is new
Microsoft Defender for Office 365 already scans files stored in Microsoft 365 Storage for malware. Until now, that verdict lived inside Microsoft. M-Files for Microsoft Defender closes the gap. M-Files reads the Defender malware status and enforces it at the moment someone tries to open a file.
When a file is flagged as malicious, M-Files blocks the preview and the download and shows the user a clear message explaining why access is restricted. It works the same way on both the desktop and web clients, without changing how your teams work day to day. Investigation and remediation stay where they belong, inside the Microsoft Defender portal.
Who does what
The division of labour is clean. Microsoft detects. M-Files enforces.
Why this matters for regulated teams
For accountancy firms, engineering practices, legal teams and public-sector bodies, business-critical content cannot be a blind spot. This integration extends the malware controls already running in your Microsoft 365 tenant to the content you manage and govern in M-Files.
Files Microsoft identifies as malware are blocked at the point of access, with a plain message to the user.
The malware controls already active in your tenant now cover content managed in M-Files. No additional security tooling.
You get more out of Microsoft-native security by extending its coverage to governed business content.
Metadata, workflows, permissions and governance stay with M-Files. Microsoft handles malware detection.
